Is Your Worry More Than Worry?
Middle school years can bring a lot of fear.
You may worry about your child’s friends.
Their choices.
Their emotions.
Their faith.
Their future.
And sometimes, your own heart feels tired too.
In this Faith Mom Mentor interview, Dr. Angela Thomas reminds us that some of the battles we face are not just mental or emotional. They can also be spiritual. The Bible teaches us that winning the war in our mind takes more than positive thoughts. It takes the Holy Spirit, prayer, God’s Word, and the armor of God.

You Are Not Just “Overthinking”
Many moms feel anxiety and think, “I just need to calm down.”
But Dr. Angela helps us see that fear, worry, and emotional stress may point to a deeper battle.
This does not mean we live scared.
It means we stay awake.
The enemy may be smart, but God is stronger. And God has given us help.
He gives us:
Prayer
The Bible
The Holy Spirit
Faith
Truth
Community
You are not left alone in the fight.
Go Back and Watch Your Own Film
Dr. Angela used a simple picture from sports.
After a game, athletes watch the film. They look for patterns.
Where did they miss something?
Where did the other team keep attacking?
Where do they need to grow?
Moms can do the same thing.
Ask yourself:
- Where do I keep getting anxious?
- What keeps making me angry?
- What fear keeps coming back?
- Where do I feel spiritually stuck?
- What pattern is showing up in my home?
This is not about shame.
It is about seeing clearly.
When you see the pattern, you can bring it to God.
Knowing the Bible Is Not the Same as Living It
Many of us know Bible verses.
But living the Word is different.
Dr. Angela said it is like a relationship. You can know facts about someone, or you can truly know them.
God does not want a “check the box” faith.
He wants your heart.
That means talking to Him during the day.
- Before the hard conversation
- Before the school meeting.
- Before you answer your child in anger.
- Before you let fear take over.
A simple prayer can be powerful:
- “Holy Spirit, help me.”
- “Lord, give me wisdom.”
- “God, show me what is true.”
- “Jesus, help me obey.”
Put On the Armor in Real Life
Spiritual warfare can sound big and scary.
But the armor of God is practical.
It means choosing truth when your mind is full of lies.
It means choosing peace when your home feels tense.
It means choosing faith when fear is loud.
It means choosing prayer instead of panic.
For a mom of a middle schooler, this may look like:
- Pausing before you react
- Praying before you correct
- Reading Scripture before scrolling
- Asking God for wisdom before giving advice
- Speaking truth over your child instead of fear
This is how faith becomes real in everyday life.
Your Child Has a Different View
Dr. Angela also reminded us that every person has a different life story.
Even people in the same home can see things in different ways.
That matters for moms.
Your middle schooler may not see things the way you do.
Their fears may seem small to you.
Their emotions may feel too big.
Their choices may confuse you.
But you can come close with humility.
Be curious.
Ask questions.
Listen first.
Then help them see God, themselves, and others through the truth of Scripture.
Culture Is Not the Boss
Culture tells us many things are normal.
Anger is normal.
Selfishness is normal.
Gossip is normal.
Fear is normal.
Doing life alone is normal.
But God’s Word is our mirror.
When we look in the Bible, we do not ask, “How can I be a better version of me?”
We ask, “Lord, make me more like You.”
That is a big shift.
God is not calling you to copy culture.
He is calling you to follow Him.
Your Past Does Not Disqualify You
One of the most hope-filled parts of the interview was this truth:
God uses people with complicated pasts.
Dr. Angela talked about Rahab, the woman at the well, and others in the Bible who had hard stories.
God still used them.
Mom, your past does not cancel God’s purpose for your life.
Your mistakes do not scare Him.
Your scars can become places where His glory shines.
God can use you to lead your child with wisdom, love, and truth.
Do Not Do This Alone
Dr. Angela gave a clear word of encouragement:
Stay in community.
Faith was never meant to be lived alone.
Moms need other moms.
Women need sisters in Christ.
Believers need support, prayer, and truth.
Community helps us see that we are not the only ones struggling.
It gives us hope.
It helps us keep going.
A Simple Prayer for Today
Lord, help me win the war in my mind. Help me notice the patterns that keep me stuck. Teach me to pray before I panic. Help me live Your Word, not just know it. Give me peace, wisdom, and faith as I raise my child. Holy Spirit, lead me today. Amen.
