The Fragrance of Christ: What Are You Diffusing Into Your Home?

Have you ever walked into a room and immediately noticed a scent?

Sometimes it feels calming and welcoming.
Other times, it can feel overwhelming or unpleasant.

That is the power of fragrance.

Recently, I was looking at beautiful diffusers, essential oils, and even a devotional called The Fragrance of Faith. It made me think deeply about something Scripture teaches us:

God has always cared about fragrance.

The Holy Fragrance of the Temple

In the Old Testament, God gave Moses a very specific recipe for the holy incense used in the Tabernacle and Temple.

📖 Exodus 30:34–38 tells us that this sacred fragrance was never to be duplicated for ordinary use.

Why?

Because it was holy.
It belonged to God alone.

The fragrance represented:

• worship,

• consecration,

• God’s presence,

• and what was acceptable before Him.

It was reserved for His dwelling place.

And now, in the New Testament, something incredible has happened.

Believers themselves have become the temple of God through Christ.

📖 “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God…” — 1 Corinthians 3:16 (KJV)

We Now Carry the Fragrance of Christ

According to 2 Corinthians 2:14–15:

“For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ…”

That means your home carries a scent spiritually.

Your:

• words,

• reactions,

• peace,

• forgiveness,

• worship,

• and priorities…

all diffuse something.

As moms of middle schoolers, this matters deeply because tweens are constantly absorbing the atmosphere around them.

They are learning:

• what peace looks like,

• what pressure looks like,

• what repentance looks like,

• and whether faith is real inside the home.
  
  

Some Will Love the Fragrance… Others Will Resist It

Paul even says the gospel smells like “life” to some and “death” to others (2 Corinthians 2:16).

Honestly, essential oils can feel similar.

One person loves lavender.
Another dislikes it completely.

One finds peppermint refreshing.
Another finds it overwhelming.

The fragrance reveals the response of the person encountering it.

And in many ways, that is how the gospel works.

The fragrance of Christ comforts humble hearts…
but confronts resistant hearts.

A Simple Reminder of God’s Presence

Now, essential oils themselves are not the gospel.

They are simply part of God’s creation.

Many people use them for:

• calming,

• focus,

• sleep,

• wellness,

• and creating peaceful environments.

And there can certainly be practical value in that.

But as Christian moms, we can go deeper.

What if fragrance became a reminder of God’s glory?

What if diffusing a scent became connected to:

• prayer,

• Scripture,

• peace,

• and intentional discipleship in the home?
