When Your Tween Has Anxiety or ADHD: A Christian Mom’s Guide to Peace, Connection, and Hope
There’s a moment many moms know too well.
Your child melts down over something small. Tears. Frustration. Maybe yelling. Maybe shutting down completely. And while you’re trying to stay calm on the outside… inside, you’re wondering:
“Am I failing my child?”
If you’re raising a tween with anxiety, ADHD, emotional overwhelm, or big emotions, you are not alone—and you are not a bad mom.
In a recent conversation on the Faith Mom Mentor podcast, pediatric mental health specialist and nurse practitioner Raeanne Johnson shared something every Christian mom needs to hear:
“God made our brains, and God doesn’t make mistakes.”
That one truth changes everything.
Your Child Is Not “Broken”
One of the most powerful moments from the conversation was this reminder:
Sometimes brains struggle just like bodies struggle.
ADHD, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, and executive functioning challenges are not signs that your child lacks faith—or that you’ve failed as a parent.
Instead of seeing your child as “difficult,” Raeanne encourages moms to ask a different question:
“What’s happening underneath this behavior?”
That shift alone can transform your parenting.
Because when we understand the “why” behind the meltdown, we respond with wisdom instead of shame.
And honestly? Most moms need that reminder too.
The Hidden Reason Behind Big Emotions
Here’s something fascinating: many emotional reactions are connected to what’s happening inside the brain.
Raeanne explained how neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine influence emotions, focus, impulsivity, and stress responses.
In simple terms:
• Anxiety can feel like a constant false alarm system
• ADHD brains often seek stimulation and movement
• Emotional outbursts are sometimes nervous systems crying out for regulation—not rebellion
And suddenly, that child who seemed “defiant” starts making a lot more sense.
One Practical Tool Every Family Can Try
One of the most helpful parenting ideas shared was creating a “Regulation Station.”
Think of it as a calm-down toolkit your child can access during emotional overwhelm.
Inside could be:
• Sensory tools
• Bubble breathing exercises
• Ice water
• Music
• A weighted blanket or eye mask
• Scripture cards
• A favorite calming activity
The goal isn’t punishment.
The goal is helping kids learn:
“How do I calm my brain and body with God’s help?”
That’s emotional regulation.
And it’s a skill children can learn over time.
Christian Parenting Means Connection Before Correction
One line from the interview stood out deeply:
“All feelings are valid. All behaviors are not.”
That’s biblical parenting in action.
Jesus showed emotion. Scripture tells us to “be angry and do not sin.” Our children are allowed to feel sadness, fear, frustration, and disappointment.
But they also need guidance, boundaries, and tools to respond well.
This is where Christian parenting becomes so powerful:
• We correct with grace
• We disciple through relationship
• We model repentance and emotional health
• We remind our children their worth never changes
Especially when they struggle.
Daily Habits That Build Emotional Health
Want to know something surprising?
Research shows families who eat together regularly experience lower rates of anxiety and depression.
Simple moments matter.
Raeanne also shared daily rhythms her family uses:
• Talking about the best and hardest part of the day
• Praying together during difficult emotions
• Using Scripture during discipline moments
• Modeling emotional honesty as parents
These habits don’t require perfection.
They require presence.
A Word for the Overwhelmed Christian Mom
If you’re exhausted from navigating ADHD symptoms, anxiety, emotional meltdowns, or parenting stress…
Take a breath.
God chose you for your child.
You do not have to parent from fear.
You can lead with wisdom, emotional awareness, practical tools, and faith rooted in Christ.
And this season will not last forever.
